The Corrs rock the world’s press

On Sunday 8th June the band performed a special one-off concert at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, in honour of the 56th World Newspaper Congress.

The concert was part of a special welcome reception for newspaper editors and publishers visiting Dublin for the congress. Sponsored by Waterford Wedgwood, the evening was a fantastic success with the Corrs acting as the centrepiece of a very special evening.

It’s the first time the congress – hosted by the Paris-based World Association of Newspapers – has taken place in Ireland, and the audience in the Concert Hall included some 1200 delegates representing newspapers in more than 90 countries around the world.

Also present was the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, who welcomed the overseas delegates to Dublin and met with Andrea, Sharon, Caroline and Jim Corr before their special performance. Her husband, Dr Martin McAleese, was also there.

Other special guests included media owner Sir Anthony O’Reilly and his wife Lady Cryss O’Reilly, and their son Gavin O’Reilly – Chairman of the National Newspapers of Ireland – and his wife Alison, the former actress. The Lord Mayor of Dublin was also present, as was Redmond O’Donoghue, Chief Executive of Waterford Wedgwood plc, as well as many of the leading figures in the world of publishing.

The band played for around an hour, and treated the crowd to an acoustic selection of their greatest hits, including ‘Run Away’, ‘Forgiven not Forgotten’ and ‘Radio’, as well as some simply irresistable traditional Irish music that had toes tapping all around the hall. The band was accompanied by a beautiful eight-piece orchestra, which added lustre and resonance to the sound.
